Savage 116 stainless barrel contour

I had a smooth barrel nut, it came off easily with a pipe wrench on the nut and an action wrench.

I had smooth nut and pipe wench plus heat would not budge. Had to cut into it with small cutoff wheel.

I got the barrel off today and it came off pretty easy once I got the right shims for the wrench. So I wonder about the whole precision barrel nut a recoil lug thing. My gun shot really well much better than any other factory gun I owned except for my sendero which shot about the same. I do hand load everything and will go back with a precision ground recoil lug, and new nut but how precise was the original? Definitely want a new nut which is easier to takeoff but now I'm going to measure the barrel out completely just to see is it a straight taper or something else? So far it looks like a straight taper but maybe the picture on the barrel website over exaggerate the slimming down of the barrel at a certain point. That might be my entire confusion and mine is a magnum supporter.. heck I might even want to go with a different stock really like the adjustable cheek risers. But I don't wanna lose the a full aluminum bedding area. So I guess I got some things to look up.
