My 1:9 twist was sufficient to stabilize the 170 gr Berger. The cow elk was quartering towards me at 250yds. The projectile broke through the rib behind the shoulder and travelled diagonally breaking the off side rib and stopped just under the skin. The cow elk took two steps and dropped. The...
The 165 gr Matrix for my 270 WSM was great. They no longer make it. I have a
1 to 9 twist barrel that stabilized a Berger 170gr bullet with good results on a cow elk.
What other experiences for a substituttion are out there
26 in. Remington 1:12 twist. I have access to IMR 4064, CFE 223, Varget, Vihn 140. COAL is not an issue as I will chamber one at a time and not us the magazine. Thanks for the info.
I did not consider using a 215 Berger target bullet with a 308 Win for hunting until I began reading this blog. Is it beneficial to anneal the bullet in order to promote expansion. If so how do you determine the correct amount of heat and time?
Remington 700 26 in. Barrel 1:12 twist. looking for 150 gr or 165gr bullet that can be stabilized. I have been using a 270 wsm with success but want to try my 308.
I shoot a 165gr Matrix out of a 270 WSM with a 1.95 twist at 3083 ft per sec with a .4 MOA at 100 yds. As the projectile looses velocity at 800 yds wills the stability also diminish. Do I need a faster twist for long distant stability and accuracy?
My first two shots at deer turned out to be easy from my brother in laws blind. Then I tried spot and stock. Not easy hesitant to take the shot got lucky twice. Thought shooting trap with a 12 gauge would help my hunting with target acquisition and off hand shooting. I do not get to hunt more...
I have a new 28 inch Kreiger barrel for a 270 WSM that will be delivered in about three months. What twist would you suggest to stabilize a 140 accubond for a deer and a 165 or 175 matrix bullet for elk?
I tried adding height to the stock with aftermarket products but found them to flexible to produce a consistent cheek weld. I then progressed to a custom stock from McMillan with an adjustable cheek weld.
Thanks for all of the good advice.
I will try several of them and see which one feels the most natural and repeatable. I know there's strength in the statement that says practice practice practice but sometimes practicing the wrong way takes more time to correct than understanding the right...
